IVF is hard. Support shouldn’t be.

IVF is one of the most physically and emotionally demanding experiences many women face. Between injections, scans, appointments and the constant buzz of “what if,” your nervous system ends up on high alert. That’s where acupuncture comes in, not as an alternative to your medical care, but as a supportive, research‑informed therapy that can help you manage stress, support blood flow, and potentially create a more receptive environment for implantation.

What the Research Shows

One of the most studied ways acupuncture is integrated into IVF cycles is the Paulus protocol, sessions scheduled immediately before and after embryo transfer. In a landmark trial using this method, women who received acupuncture around transfer had higher pregnancy rates than those who did not.

More recent randomised controlled trials suggest that acupuncture performed before egg retrieval and before embryo transfer may increase endometrial blood flow and uterine receptivity, two factors important for implantation.

A 2025 meta‑analysis also associated acupuncture with higher clinical pregnancy rates when used around embryo transfer compared to no treatment.

Stress, Cortisol and Fertility

IVF isn’t just physical, it’s a mental marathon. Stress increases levels of cortisol, the body’s stress hormone, and research links elevated cortisol with poorer reproductive outcomes in assisted reproduction.

Studies show that acupuncture can lower salivary cortisol and anxiety scores, offering measurable nervous system support, not just vibes.

How Acupuncture Can Complement Your IVF Care

Here’s what the research and clinical experience suggests acupuncture might do when used alongside IVF (always alongside your medical care, never instead of it):

✔ Support circulation to uterus and ovaries

✔ Support stress regulation (hello, lower cortisol 🧘‍♀️)

✔ Offer a calming, grounding space during a stressful journey

✔ Potentially boost emotional resilience and sleep quality

None of this replaces your medications or protocols, but it can help your body carry its part of the IVF load a little more comfortably.

I’ve worked with so many women who tell me the same thing: acupuncture became one of the only injections they didn’t dread, an oasis of calm during a cycle of highs, lows, and never‑ending waiting rooms.

IVF is a team effort, and you deserve a team that supports both body and mind.
